Frequently Asked Questions

Why BrokerEdge, and why now?

Indiana real estate brokers must renew their licenses on a three-year cycle – 2023 is a renewal year for all brokers, and renewal applications are due by June 30th. June 30th is also the annual Continuing Education deadline – Indiana requires twelve hours of CE each year (July 1st-to-June 30th), starting two years after brokers initially earn their real estate license.

License renewals may be submitted 90 days before June 30th, but all three years of CE for the renewal cycle (36 hours) must be completed before applying for renewal. Not completing CE requirements or even applying for renewal before finishing CE hours risks a fine, license suspension or other disciplinary action from the PLA.

It’s a lot to keep track of – especially for a full brokerage in the busiest months of the year.

BrokerEdge connects managing brokers directly to PLA data through a convenient dashboard to track CE and license renewal activity: Make sure your licensees are in compliance or on track to remain in good standing and catch potential issues (including reporting discrepancies) before they turn into bigger problems after June 30th.

All you need is your Indiana license number: Log in today for a compliance check-up.

I’m not receiving an email when logging in with my license number.

Go to https://mylicense.in.gov/eGov/index.html and update your email. If the email is the same as the email you entered for the log in code, please email brokeredge@indianarealtors.services for assistance.

What is the time period for a CE cycle?

A Continuing Education (CE) year is the twelve-month period between July 1 and June 30 of the following calendar year.

When do we renew our licenses?

The renewal period is open now, covering a 90-day window between April 1, 2023 and June 30, 2023:

  • Licensees must complete all 36 hours before you renew (12 hours each CE cycle);
  • Do not renew your license until you have completed all 36 hours;
  • BrokerEdge is a new tool from IAR, made possible by a data-sharing partnership with the Professional Licensing Agency - PLA, that allows managing brokers to track the CE compliance of your licensees during this renewal season.

How many hours of CE do brokers need? Do I have different requirements as a managing broker?

  • Licensees need 12 hours of CE for every annual CE cycle (July 1 to June 30). Every broker needs to complete this 12 hour requirement if they have been licensed for more than two years.
  • A Managing Broker also needs 4 hours designated for Managing Brokers plus 8 general CE hours for the 12-hour total.
  • If a broker is a Managing Broker and an Instructor, the 12-hour total remains the same with another specification – 4 hours designated for Managing Brokers, 4 hours designated for Instructors, plus 4 additional hours.

I don’t see a broker in my firm listed on the BrokerEdge site – where are they?

First, check the Professional Licensing Agency website to make sure they’re listed there, or if they’re still listed with their previous brokerage – a delayed or incomplete license transfer could be the issue. Start here: https://mylicense.in.gov/everification/Search.aspx

My information doesn’t seem up to date; I took a class this morning and it is not added to my total.

BrokerEdge is updated with new data from PLA on a daily basis (each morning); refresh your dashboard the following day to confirm the CE credits have been added. (If courses still aren’t appearing, confirm you’ve fully completed and submitted the class through your provider.)

I don’t see courses or credits I (or one of my licensees) have completed, and it’s been a few days.

Contact the school where you completed courses to make sure they have uploaded the information to PLA. Remember, Schools have 10 days to upload the data to PLA.

One of my brokers is shown on probation, but that should have been removed years ago. How do they get it updated?

A broker must request a personal appearance at PLA to have their status changed. They will need to show they completed all outstanding items that caused the probationary status, e.g. CE courses, fines paid, etc.

Who is a newly licensed broker? Why does that matter?

A newly licensed broker has earned their real estate license within the past two years and needs to complete a 30-hour post-licensing course during that two-year period; the 12-hour annual CE requirement begins in the third year. This means new brokers may not have CE required before their first renewal, or may only need 12 hours for the current year.

So how should my 'newly-licensed' brokers answer the renewal question, "Have you completed the required CE for renewal?"

New brokers should answer "yes" to this question, as they are meeting the requirement (or lack of a requirement, as the case may be) for their circumstances.

Why does it mean when a licensee's profile says, 'not eligible for a CE cycle?'

This is also related to 'newly-licensed' broker status: Brokers that are within the first two years of their license being issued are not required to complete CE – therefore listed as ineligible – and instead need to complete the 30-hour post-licensing course. RECP offers the course online or live. If they take the course online, you can offer them a $25 discount by using the code: POST25.

Why can’t my brokers renew their licenses now, as long as they plan to have their CE completed by June 30th?

Both the CE and license renewal deadlines are June 30th, but the order of completion and submission does matter. The final question of the license renewal form reads, "Have you completed the required CE for renewal?" Submitting a renewal while answering 'yes' to this question before completing all CE is falsifying an official document, and risks disciplinary action if the discrepancy is discovered by the PLA.

I finished 36 hours in the three-year cycle but BrokerEdge still indicates “out of compliance” for one of the years.

You must finish 12 hours every year – the requirement is an annual total, not a cumulative total of 36 hours spread through the three-year cycle.

So if a broker missed CE hours in a previous year, do they have any recourse? What can they do about it now?

Licensees should make up the missed hours and still complete the 36-hour total, as it could lessen the repercussions from the PLA (often a fine, instead of a fine plus a license suspension), especially keeping in mind the unique circumstances impacting 2020.

What can a broker do to access courses if they missed CE from a previous cycle?

RECP offers classes from previous CE cycles with a nominal ($20) reactivation fee – www.RECP.org.

Do I need to renew my brokerage license as well?

Yes, brokerage firms need to renew their licenses too; managing brokers should have received a separate e-mail addressing the brokerage license. To renew broker companies, go to the business licensing section (right-hand side) of https://mylicense.in.gov/eGov/index.html and use the brokerage license number and registration code listed on the renewal notice from PLA.

Managing brokers operating as sole proprietorships will not have a brokerage company license; they may wish to seek legal and financial counsel on the benefits of organizing as an LLC or other corporate structure, separate from the licensing process.
